Join Tsalteshi Trails Association for weekly summer activities from June to August. Guided hikes and rides, informational topics, free and open to the public! Get familiar with the trails, meet other trail users and maybe even learn something in the process. Most events last about an hour. Dress for the weather and bring your bug deterrent of choice. Slikok Trailhead: Across the Sterling Highway and a tiny bit south of the Central Peninsula Landfill in Soldotna.
Birding walk, June 8. Join birding experts George and Beverly Kirsch for a morning birding walk at Tsalteshi. Learn to identify our feathered friends by sight and sound. Bring bug spray or a head net. Binoculars are a good idea, too. Meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Wolverine (K-Beach) Trailhead.
Bike maintenance clinic, June 15 — Learn about bike maintenance, useful gear for trail riding and tips for riding on Tsalteshi Trails. Brian from Beemuns Bike Loft will demonstrate basic maintenance skills every cyclist should know. Meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Soldotna Library. The library requests preregistration so they know how many are coming. Sign up here.
Group mountain bike ride for adults, June 18 — Join certified mountain bike coach Sofia Petroni for a mountain bike skills workshop and group ride on the trails. Meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18 at the Skyview Trailhead. Bring a bike in good working order, a helmet and water. More info on coach Sofia here. She’s also available to book private coaching sessions June 19. No dogs allowed for this one.
Forest ecology hike, June 24. Join forester Mitch Michaud for a trail walk to Tsalteshi’s hemlock grove. (Bet you didn’t know Tsalteshi has hemlocks!) Meet at the Skyview Trailhead at 6 p.m. Monday, June 24.
Trail training, July 2. Laura Gerber, a physical therapist with Alaska Aquatic & Rehab Therapy and Awareness in Motion Alaska, offers tips for avoiding and overcoming injuries and getting in shape for hiking. Meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Wolverine (K-Beach) Trailhead.
Story hike for kids, July 16. Bring the kiddos for a presentation by the Soldotna Library’s summer reading program. Learn about hiking on the trails, read a nature-oriented book, enjoy a snack and go for a short walk on the trails. Meet at 2 p.m Tuesday, July 16 at the Skyview Trailhead.
Walk With a Doc, Aug. 7. Join a group hike led by a doctor from Central Peninsula Hospital. Stretch your legs, learn about health and meet new friends. Meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Skyview track.
Plant identification walk. Bonnie the botanist with the Kenai Watershed Forum will lead a hike identifying native and invasive plants along the trails. Meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Skyview Trailhead. CANCELED
Trail dog training, Aug. 15. Trainers from The Well Mannered Canine will offer tips for hiking with dogs. How to meet other dogs, how to stay safe around wildlife, dog first aid, and more! Meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Wolverine (K-Beach) Trailhead.
Forest foraging, Aug. 18 Larissa Notter with Alaska Herbal Solutions will point out wild herbal and edible plants on the trails. Meet at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Wolverine Trailhead.
Preseason ski training, Aug. 27. Ski season is around the corner — start getting in shape with training tips from our ski coaches! Learn skills, drills and exercises you can practice now to be ready when it snows. Meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Skyview Trailhead. Bring your classic ski poles (or trekking poles).
