Like it or not, spring has apparently sprung. We’re unable to groom and there is no appreciable snow in the forecast, so we’re calling a wrap on the winter that largely wasn’t. As of today, Winter Rules are suspended. That means the ski trails from the Skyview and Wolverine (K-Beach) Trailheads are open to foot traffic, bikes and dogs.
Be warned:
- The trails are icy! On the bright side, conditions are firm enough to be great for walking, running and biking without much sloshing in slush or mud. But shoe and tire traction is recommended. Mud and breakup sinkholes are starting to appear but so far are easily avoidable.
- Share the trails! Always assume a moose could be around the next bend. The neighborhood caribou are still making occasional appearances. And it might not be long before bears are up and about. Keep your eyes and ears open and keep dogs under control at all times (under immediate voice recall or on a leash).
- Since the trails don’t tend to get much use in the shoulder season, TTA has turned off the evening trail lights and will pull the Port-A-Potties at the Skyview and Slikok Trailheads until we gear up for the summer season. This saves us some money in a year of low winter event revenue. The Wolverine Trailhead (K-Beach) has a year-round outhouse, and with daylight saving time on Sunday, it’ll be staying light out later anyway.
Singletrack closed
While the main ski trails are holding up well, the singletrack trails are melting fast. We’re getting down to bare dirt and advancing mud, so all STX trails are closed until they dry out. Riding them in soft conditions creates ruts that maintenance crews have to repair by hand. To get to good summer riding sooner, we close STX trails in the spring until they’re dry enough to ride without causing damage. Please help us preserve the trails by observing trail closure signs and barriers.
Stay tuned
We’ll keep you updated on trail conditions as spring picks up speed. We might hit a point where the trails are too soft to use without causing damage. But for now, get out and get some fresh air and Vitamin D
