Slikok upgrades

Slikok trails users, have we got some exciting news for you! Tsalteshi Trails Association has begun a project to improve the Slikok Multi-Use Trails: 1. Highway access: Work is finishing up now to realign the entrance to the trailhead from the Sterling Highway. There used to be several turn-offs from the highway, which could be confusing and lead to unsafe traffic conditions. Two of the old entrances have been closed and the middle one has been widened and paved to make an easier turn on and off the highway. With this work complete, we will now be eligible to get signage on the highway! No more directing people to Slikok by saying, “Look for the unmarked turn-offs across from the dump.” 2. TTA Bylaws revision

The Tsalteshi Trails Association Board of Directors reviewed TTA's Bylaws and proposes making a few changes to better align our bylaws with changes to the organization's current structure and function. All current TTA members are welcome to review the changes and offer feedback to the board. The board will consider all comments on the proposed bylaws revisions when making a decision at its next meeting, April 16. Proposed changes can be viewed here: TTA Bylaws April 2025 revision Proposed areas to be changed are highlighted in YELLOW. Proposed language to be added is UNDERLINED. Tsalteshi opens new maintenance building

[caption id="attachment_4681" align="alignright" width="241"] Ricky Gease, director of the Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, talks about the importance of outdoor recreation as a driver of Alaska's economy.[/caption] Tsalteshi Trails Association is thrilled to welcome the newest member of the TTA family — Hetl Qenq'a, which means "Sled House" in Dena'ina. The new 36-by-60-foot maintenance and storage building replaces our 20-year-old, 16-by-24-foot snowmachine shed. The shed could barely fit TTA's active snowmachines, had no space to work on machines and couldn't fit any of our other equipment. The new building has dry, heated and secure storage for all our equipment, plus room to grow. It will increase the lifespan of our grooming machines — and likely our groomers. Tsalteshi Trails Association has two seats open for membership election on its Board of Directors for the 2024-2025 term, and one seat open for board appointment for a 2024 term. Below are board candidate bios, as well as information about our current and retiring board members. TTA members in good standing as of Dec. 1 will get an email link to an online poll for voting. Membership rates increase Nov. 1

General, TTA Board of Directors

Membership revenue is a huge chunk of Tsalteshi’s annual operational budget, helping us pay for everything from trail grooming to toilet paper for the outhouse. Tsalteshi Trails Association is a nonprofit organization, not part of a municipal parks department. Our budget is covered through memberships, donations and grants. Costs have steadily increased over the last five years — fuel, equipment maintenance, insurance, even that toilet paper costs more these days. Tsalteshi is facing a growing deficit in our operational budget if we don’t make up the difference. Our board spent a lot of time crunching numbers and decided it’s time to adjust membership rates. (We also spent a lot of time trying to figure out the last time rates were changed and it’s been so long no one could remember…

TTA survey spring 2023 Thank you to everyone who completed our trail user survey this spring. You gave our Board of Directors a lot to discuss. The survey provides important information about our users, what you value about the trails, areas we could do better and what you’d like to see in the years ahead. We are factoring your responses into our current operations, programming, priorities and areas of growth in the future. In reviewing survey results, several themes emerged: Projects We’re with you — we would love to do ALL THE THINGS!!! As a nonprofit organization, Tsalteshi must seek grants and raise our own funds for any developments we pursue. And we have to balance long-term sustainability with desired improvements.
